Old biker video unrelated to 2024 Republican convention

Amid heightened security at the Republican National Convention (RNC) following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, social media users claimed a video showed throngs of bikers riding toward the US state of Wisconsin to support the former president. But the clip dates back to at least 2015 and shows members of the Mongols Motorcycle Club.

"So, it appears that real security is headed to Milwaukee #J13 #RNCConvention," says a July 15, 2024 post sharing the clip on X.

Similar posts spread across X and other platforms -- including Instagram, TikTok and YouTube -- amid concerns over security at the RNC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The convention commenced July 15, just days after a gunman wounded the former president at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

One post claims the video shows members of the notorious Hells Angels Motorcycle Club arriving in Milwaukee to "protect Trump at all costs."

But the clip is unrelated to the RNC, where Trump formally accepted the Republican Party's nomination for president.

A reverse image search revealed the footage was posted to YouTube as early as July 10, 2015 (archived here). The video shows about 500 members of the Mongols Motorcycle Club, another outlaw motorcycle gang, riding a freeway toward Laughlin, Nevada.

Patches associated with the Mongols appear on several of the motorcyclists' jackets.
