The post’s Korean-language caption translates to English as: “Happening now. It seems like something has happened in Haeundae of Busan.
“A human corpse has been washed up there.”
The photos were shared alongside a similar claim here on Facebook; here on South Korea’s online community JJang0u; here on Instiz; and here on Hygall.
The claim is false.
The Busan Coast Guard, the local law enforcement sub-agency responsible for maritime safety and control, told AFP on December 14, 2020 that the object pictured in the misleading posts is a pig carcass, not a human corpse.
The Haeundae Police Station and Busan Coast Guard first received a report at about 2:27 pm on December 13, 2020, that an unidentified object was floating near the west side of the Haeundae Beach, according to this article by Busan Ilbo, the city’s largest daily newspaper, published on December 13, 2020.
The report states police confirmed the object was a pig carcass before handing the case over to the coast guard.
The report translates to English in part as: “Reports of a body floating on the beach near Haeundae Beach in Busan caused commotion and forced the police and the coast guard to rush to the scene. But the unidentified floating object was found to be a pig carcass, not a human body.”
