The image has been doctored from a photo of American pop star Madonna

An image has been shared thousands of times in multiple Facebook posts which claim it shows Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. The claim is false; the image has been doctored from a photo of American pop star Madonna.

The image was published in this Facebook post on October 15. It has been shared more than 4,000 times.

The claim is false; the image has been doctored from a photo of American pop star Madonna.

A reverse image search on Yandex of the doctored image found it was manipulated from an original portrait of Madonna, which was photographed in 1992 by Steven Meisel for Vogue.

The photograph was included in a feature spread on the popstar that was published in the magazine's October 1992 edition. A copy of the article can be viewed here on the fan website All About Madonna.

The image of Kahlo's face corresponds with a 1931 portrait of her taken by American photographer Imogen Cunningham published here.
