A video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times in multiple Indonesian social media posts alongside a misleading claim that it shows a mass crowd joining presidential hopeful Anies Baswedan's event in East Kalimantan province. The video actually shows clips of two separate events: an event in East Kalimantan that Anies attended in February 2023 and an unrelated motorcycle club activity in Yogyakarta province in October 2022.

The one-minute 41-second video was uploaded here on YouTube on May 26, 2023.

Its Indonesian-language title translates as: "East Kalimantan Healthy Walk with Anies", referring to Anies Baswedan, a presidential hopeful in the 2024 election (archived link).

The first 43 seconds of the clip show a big crowd singing around a stage, while the remaining part of the clip shows Anies surrounded by supporters eager to shake his hand.

Ahead of the 2024 election, Anies, one of the three Indonesian presidential candidates, has been going on political tours criss-crossing the country to shore up support, including visiting East Kalimantan province in February 2023 (archived links here and here).

The video has racked up more than 303,000 views after it was shared with a similar claim on TikTok here and here, on Twitter here and here, on Facebook, and YouTube here and here.

However, the claim is misleading.

While the second portion of the clip does show Anies with a crowd of supporters in East Kalimantan, the first 43 seconds of the clip were filmed during an unrelated event.

Misrepresented clip

The footage that shows a crowd in front of a stage was uploaded on video-sharing app SnackVideo by a user called "yhjmn070" on October 9, 2022 (archived link).

Its caption says "jamda 3" -- short for Jambore Daerah III -- a gathering hosted by the Yamaha RX-King Indonesia (YRKI) motorcycle club in Yogyakarta province on the island of Java, as reported by local news outlet Solopos on the same day (archived link).

A reverse image search of the clip's keyframes found that similar footage from a slightly different angle was posted on YRKI's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts on October 10, 2022 (archived links here, here and here).

All of YRKI's posts were captioned: "Congratulations and Success in Organising / 3rd Regional Jamboree / Yamaha RX-King Indonesia (YRKI) / Yogyakarta Province Regional Chapter".

YRKI posted a flyer announcing Jambore Daerah III on Facebook here on October 5, 2022, saying that the event would take place on October 7-9 at the parking area of Maguwoharjo Stadium, in Sleman regency, Yogyakarta (archived links here and here).

Buildings in the clip correspond to Google Street View of the area near the stadium (archived link).

The same video was used in false posts claiming it shows Anies' campaign rally in Banten province, which AFP has debunked here.

Event with Anies

The second part of the clip in the misleading post was taken from this video report, published on YouTube by local media MNA 24 on February 19, 2023 (archived link). It is headlined: "Healthy Walk with Anies in East Kalimantan."

A sign seen in the clip corresponds to one shown in Google Street View imagery here of the Kadrie Oening Sports Stadium in Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan province (archived link).

On that day, Anies attended the "Healthy Walk" activity of the Pancasila Youth, an Indonesian paramilitary organisation, in Samarinda, as reported by Indonesian media here and here (archived links here and here).

Pictures from that event were posted on the Instagram accounts of Anies and the Pancasila Youth (archived links here and here).

AFP has previously debunked other false claims about Anies, for example here, here and here.
