“Exposed: Tinubu daughters finally exposed their father,” reads the caption on the video. It was posted on Facebook on August 12, 2022, and has since been shared more than 1,000 times.
Tinubu is a seasoned Nigerian politician and the presidential candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Nigeria goes to the polls in February next year to elect a new leader.
The video, produced by a YouTube channel called “FK Entertainment”, begins with a brief introduction to the footage of Tinubu’s “daughters” by a presenter. “Let’s watch what they have to say,” he says.
For the next few minutes, the video switches between an edited version of a television interview with a woman criticising Tinubu and a social media clip of what appears to be the same woman, again criticising the presidential candidate. In both clips, she refers to him as "my father".
“Those around you have refused to tell you the truth, if they do, you would have known that government of imposition that would finally fall back on personal interest would not happen,” she says in the latter clip.
“FK Entertainment” is a video content creator with more than 150,000 followers on Facebook. The channel posts content in support of opposition candidate Peter Obi as well as the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra group.
The video was shared on Twitter here and here.
But the claim it makes that Tinubu’s “daughters” spoke out against their “father” is false.
One woman, not two
By searching on YouTube for keywords like "Tinubu", "daughters" and "father", AFP Fact Check eventually found the original version of the television interview, which was broadcast on the weekly show called “Rubbin Minds” on May 15, 2022. In this full version, the woman is introduced as Adetoun Onajobi, a Nigerian activist, not as Tinubu's daughter.
In the interview, when she was asked about Tinubu’s legacy in Lagos, Onajobi disclosed her husband once worked closely with Tinubu and she referred to him as “my father”, but nonetheless called him a “scam” and a bad choice for president.
The second clip in the misleading video was published two months later on an Instagram page called “@justadetoun”, which features numerous selfie videos by Onajobi.

”Tinubu is like my father and a father in-law to me, but I will never support his ambition to become the president,” she says in her Instagram post.
A Facebook page in Onajobi's name published the same video.
In this video, she indicates that she is from Ijebu in Ogun state, southwest Nigeria. The Facebook page in her name also indicates she is from Ijebu. Tinubu, meanwhile, is from Lagos state.
It is not uncommon for Yorubas – the ethnic group to which Onajobi and Tinubu belong – to refer to someone who is older as “my father”.
AFP Fact Check asked Onajobi for comment and will update this article if she responds.
Meanwhile, Tinubu’s biological daughter, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, has openly endorsed her father’s bid to become president (here and here).
