The video was live-streamed for around an hour by a Facebook user on March 15, with the caption “Strange creature”. The post, archived here, has been viewed more than 75,000 times and shared 820 times.
The same Facebook user, who has more than 50,000 followers, shared the footage in separate posts here and here. It also garnered thousands of views here and here.

The comment section indicated some viewers were bewildered by what they were watching.

AFP ran a reverse image search and found that the video was created by a Malaysian artist and digital producer using computer graphics software toolsets Blender3D and After Effects.
The original video was posted here by Mclelun Lee on his Facebook page on October 19, 2018, with the caption “Cthulhu Rubber DuckHeavy rain and a strange floating rubber duck on the sky”.
In the post, Lee said he made the video using software such as Blender3D and After Effects.

On March 19, 2020, Lee shared this video acknowledging that his footage had been circulating as a “fake”.
“I got notified that some guy live-streamed one of my VFX test videos on Facebook a few days ago," he said.
"A lot of people knew it is fake and had some good laughs looking at the majestic flying rubber duck. But some still thought it is really due to the badly cropped and compressed low-quality video”.

AFP contacted Mclelun Lee for comment but has not yet received a reply.
