The video was shared on Facebook here on October 27, 2020. It has been viewed more than 240 times.
The post's Indonesian-language caption translates to English as: “#BREAKING NEWS.
“An egg was pelted at the forehead of dajjal French president Emmanuel Macron, who had humiliated and insulted the PROPHET MUHAMMAD.
“He should have got a harsher punishment than just being hit by an egg ~~
“Behead his head?!
How about a beheading?!
Great…!!!”
Arabic text superimposed on the video reads: “The moment French President Emmanuel Macron got hit with eggs.”
“Dajjal” refers to an Antichrist-like figure in Islamic eschatology.
President Macron’s recent remarks defending the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad has sparked protests around the Islamic world and triggered calls to boycott French products, as AFP reported here.
The video has been viewed more than 443,000 times after it appeared alongside a similar claim on Facebook here, on Instagram here and on Twitter here.
The claim, however, is false. The video shows an incident in March 2017 when Macron, then a French presidential candidate, was pelted with an egg at an agricultural event in Paris.
A Google reverse image search, followed by a keyword search, found the video previously appeared in this report by French magazine Gala on March 1, 2017.
The scene seen in the misleading posts starts at the 15-second mark of the Gala video.
The report, translated from French to English, reads: “VIDEO — Emmanuel Macron gets an egg in the face at the Salon de l’Agriculture.”
The incident was also reported by other media, including the Associated Press. “France’s centrist presidential candidate, Emmanuel Macron, has been riding high in public opinion polls, but someone who’s clearly not a fan tossed an egg at his head,” the AP report says.
“While visiting the annual Paris farm fair on Wednesday — a must stop for candidates in the spring presidential election — Macron got hit in the back of his head with an egg. The yolk dripped over his face.”
Macron won election on May 8, 2017. He was inaugurated as president on May 14, 2017.
