A photo that has been retweeted hundreds of times on Twitter purports to show Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young holding a placard that reads: “I would rather help illegals than the 100,000 homeless Australians”. The photo has been manipulated from an original taken of Hanson-Young at a rally in which the banner states: “Free the refugees”.

This tweet with the doctored photo has been retweeted nearly 500 times and attracted more than 800 likes since being posted on May 19, 2018:

Below is a screenshot of the tweet:

The photo apparently shows Hanson-Young holding a placard that features the logo of her political party, the Australian Greens, among a crowd with people holding the same sign.

The same image was also shared in response to a tweet from Hanson-Young’s verified Twitter account here on June 4, 2018, and in a separate tweet on September 19, 2018, here.

Reverse image searches on Google traced the original photo to this post on Hanson-Young’s verified Facebook page on November 4, 2017.

Photos posted to Hanson-Young’s verified Twitter feed a day earlier show the same event, with the senator wearing the same clothes and holding the same sign.
