No, this is not a photo of smart fencing installed on Indian borders

A widely shared Facebook post contains a photograph it claims shows new Israeli-inspired smart fencing on India’s borders. The photograph was an AFP image taken on the Israel-Egypt border in 2012.

The post is in a Facebook group called ‘I Support Modi’, in reference to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It has a caption in Hindi that reads: “Wow Mr. Modi, you have delighted our hearts by installing Israeli-inspired smart fences on our borders. Now we realise that our money is being used in the right places, with hikes in diesel and petrol prices.”

The post has been shared more than 1,300 times.

The image was an AFP photo of border fencing on the Israel-Egypt border near the Israeli town of Eilat.

The photograph was taken by AFP photographer Ahmad Gharabli on 15 February 2012.
