A Facebook post shared thousands of times purports to show an image of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving a football jumper with “420” on it. Under Indian law, section 420 refers to cheating. The image has been manipulated: the original is of Modi being handed a jumper with "G20" written on it at a summit of world leaders.

The post, shared on page titled ‘JumlaExpress’, purports to show FIFA president Gianni Infantino handing Modi the jumper at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Argentina that was held on November 30 and December 1, 2018. The G20 summit gathers leaders from 19 countries and the European Union.

The photo, posted on December 3, 2018, has a caption in Hindi that reads: “Life gives justice, he’s been given the right shirt #Modi420.”

It was shared more than 7,000 times in just over one day.

The number on the shirt has been edited from an image of Modi being handed  a jumper by Infantino with G20 inscribed on it.

Modi tweeted the original photo from his verified Twitter handle.

Indian media also posted the original photo of Modi receiving the G20 jumper, such as in this Indian Express report.

Under the Indian Penal Code available online here, Section 420 refers to ‘Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.’
