Health authorities in Malaysia's Johor state say there are no plans to close Segamat Hospital, contrary to social media posts claiming it will be shuttered from July 1. The state health department, the health ministry and the health minister have said services at Segamat Hospital will continue as normal.
"Segamat Hospital will be closed down on July 1, friends. It's real guys, KKM (Ministry of Health) is collapsing," reads part of a lengthy Malay-language Facebook post shared on June 4, 2026.
The post goes on to claim that the hospital will no longer be taking referrals from any government clinics and the closure is a result of a lack of manpower.
Malaysian authorities have been trying to tackle manpower shortages faced by the public health system, with World Bank data showing the country has 2.3 doctors for every 1,000 patients (archived link).
The health ministry also said in 2025 that the public health sector was estimated to be short of 11,000 specialist doctors (archived link).
Similar claims about the hospital's closure were shared elsewhere on Instagram and Threads.
"Malaysian healthcare slowly collapsing," says a comment on one of the posts.
Another said: "Smart move. No manpower = close service."
But there have been no official reports that the Segamat Hospital, in Malaysia's Johor state, will close from July 1.
A statement by the Johor State Health Department, posted on Segamat Hospital's official Facebook page on June 4, addresses the false claim (archived link).
"The Johor State Health Department (JKNJ) has taken note of the issue currently going viral on social media regarding the claim that Segamat Hospital will be closed on 1 July 2026. JKNJ would like to emphasise that Segamat Hospital is still operating as usual and there is no closure of the hospital as claimed," it says.
It adds the hospital is "reviewing and finalising service arrangements" at its obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) department.
Moreover, the interim chairman of Johor state's Health and Environment Committee Ling Tian Soon, who visited the hospital on June 5, also said Segamat Hospital was not closing (archived link).
Ling said the hospital was facing a shortage of 49 doctors and he has brought the matter up with the health ministry.
"Segamat Hospital currently has 120 doctors, including specialists and Medical Officers (MOs), to handle various services and departments, some of which operate 24 hours a day. Based on current needs, the hospital should have 169 doctors," he said.
According to local news publication Sinar Harian, Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said patients currently receiving treatment in the hospital will continue to be treated as usual, while outpatients will be referred to nearby health facilities if necessary (archived link).
"There will be no service cuts and no hospital closures. Health services cannot be compromised," he said.
AFP has previously debunked other falsehoods linked to healthcare in Malaysia.
