Scripted forced marriage video triggers outrage in Bangladesh

Staged videos about social issues in South Asia are frequently misrepresented online as real-life scenes, sparking outrage among social media users. In Bangladesh, a scripted clip depicting a young woman in tears as she is forced to marry an old man was falsely shared as genuine. The content creator behind the footage told AFP the woman and the man were "paid actors", who can be seen performing in similar online videos.

"Young woman forced to marry old man. Video goes viral," reads a Bengali-language Facebook post shared on April 18, 2026.

The 54-second video -- viewed more than 352,000 times -- shows a young woman in bridal attire sitting next to an old man. She is seen being forced to stamp her thumbprint on a document, crying inconsolably before reluctantly giving in.

A collection of Bengali text superimposed on the video reads "forced marriage of a woman", "viral video", and "collected video".

Bangladesh does not have a specific law banning forced marriage, but a union can be declared invalid if there is evidence it was performed without the consent of either party (archived link).

The video was shared elsewhere on Facebook and generated many angry comments, including from users who said the wedding was "illegal" under the Islamic sharia law.

"Action needs to be taken against those forcing it," one wrote. Another said: "Will our girls never be free of such injustice? Can't we do anything for this sister?"

Staged online clips frequently spark misinformation in Bangladesh and neighbouring India, and the circulating video has been similarly misrepresented (archived link).

A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the video found it was taken from a YouTube channel called "NK Media One" on April 13 (archived link).

"What did the girl do while saying Qabul (accepted) during the marriage. Bangladeshi wedding video," reads the caption.

The channel has posted hundreds of similar scripted forced marriage clips, with many featuring the same individuals.

A Facebook page linked to the YouTube channel, and bearing the same name, also shared similar content (archived link).

AFP reached out to the owner of the Facebook page, who confirmed the videos were filmed for "entertainment" purposes and featured "paid actors".

"I should have mentioned in the caption that this is staged, this video going viral has created a lot of problems for me," the content creator told AFP on April 30.

They said the woman in the clip was a 22-year old artist, but did not respond to further questions.

Clips showing the same actors in various wedding videos have been cross-posted on multiple pages on Facebook and on YouTube (archived links here, here and here).
