Majority push by Canada's Liberals target of fake Trump Truth

Four members of Canadian parliament recently defected from their parties to join Prime Minister Mark Carney's ruling Liberals, but Donald Trump did not post to his Truth Social platform denouncing the political shakeup in Canada. The post does not appear on the US president's social media profiles and the fake screenshot was originally shared by a parody account.

"The Radical Left, Country Hating Liberal Party of Canada has been bribing corrupt opposition politicians to join their 'team' in order to gain an unelected majority government," says the alleged text from Trump shared in a March 27, 2026 Facebook post.

"Mark Carney, we're on to you! There's evidence coming out soon that the 2025 Canadian election was also rigged, backed by Communist China. Resign!" it concludes.

Different versions of the supposed Truth Social screenshot racked up thousands of likes as it spread across X, Instagram and Threads.

The Liberal Party won the most ridings and formed government after the 2025 Canadian elections but finished the race three seats shy of a majority (archived here). With the Liberals making up less than half of sitting members of parliament, the government needs support from other parties to pass legislation.

Since the election, three seats have been vacated and four more sitting members switched parties to join the Liberals, bringing the ruling party even closer to a majority. Floor crossing is permitted in Canada's parliamentary system, but some criticize how the practice ignores voters' choice for a particular party (archived here).

Trump previously commented on Canadian sovereignty and politics, implying the country could become the 51st US state or criticizing Canada's renewed relations with China (archived here, here and here). He did not, however, make the post about floor-crossing and alleged fraud in Canadian elections.

Searching live and archived versions of Trump's Truth Social account does not yield matching results. Factba.se, an interactive database tracking the president's public remarks and social media activity, was also absent of an exhaustive post on Canadian floor-crossing.

Furthermore, the screenshot appears to have originally been posted as satire. The earliest version of the image AFP could find was shared to X by the account "Mark Carney's Ego," which is labeled as parody and has previously seen its posts misleadingly amplified.

Holly Ann Garnett, the co-director of the nonprofit Election Integrity Project (archived here), told AFP on March 27 she was "not aware of any major fraud issues" with the 2025 election, as claimed in the fake post.

She pointed to the list of charges on the Commissioner of Canada Elections website, which did not include any complaints for the last election (archived here).

By-elections for the three remaining vacant seats are scheduled for April 13 and two victories would hand the Liberals a majority.

AFP previously fact-checked several fake Trump posts referencing Canada supposedly shared to his Truth Social platform.
