This video shows baggage handlers throwing luggage at Hong Kong airport in 2018

A video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times in multiple Facebook posts which claim it shows baggage handlers mishandling luggage at an airport in Malaysia. The claim is false; the video has circulated in media reports since 2018 about mishandling of luggage at Hong Kong International Airport.

The video was published here in a Facebook on July 12, 2019. The post’s Chinese-language caption translates to English as: “Malaysia Airport”.

The 37-second video shows baggage handlers in yellow vests roughly throwing bags into a container storage cart from a moving conveyor belt.

The video has been viewed more than 490,000 times and the post has been shared more than 14,000 times.

The claim is false; the video has circulated in media reports since 2018 about mishandling of luggage at Hong Kong International Airport.   

A reverse image search on Google and found this report published by the South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong-based newspaper, on September 29, 2018.

The report’s headline states: “Hong Kong airport baggage handlers caught red-handed throwing luggage around as Facebook video goes viral.”

The report states in part: “A video showing airline staff hurling passengers’ luggage as they take it off a plane at Hong Kong International Airport has gone viral on social media over the past two days.

“‘This (is) the way that our beloved luggage is treated!!’ Marcela Fernanda Solis Walker, the Facebook user, wrote when she posted the video.

“She said the bags were being unloaded from a Cathay Pacific Airways flight from Xiamen to Hong Kong, which landed on Thursday morning.

“In response to questions from the Post, a spokesman for Hong Kong Airport Services (HAS) said the company was aware of the footage, and had taken the matter up with the outsourced supplier involved.”

Marcela Fernanda Solis Walker published the video here on Facebook on September 27, 2018.

The post’s caption states: “This the way that our beloved luggage is treated!! I made the video this morning once my flight landed in #hongkongairport #cathaydragon #cathaypacific #cathaypacificairways #travelblogger #travelers #luggage the flight was CX5617 xiamen- hongkong departure 7:40am 27 of September . Landed on hongkong airport around 9:00 am.”
