The claim is false. A reverse image search found the photo was published in this report on Egyptian news website Copts United on August 12, 2019, about animal slaughter during Eid al-Adha.
Below is a screenshot of the photo in the report:
The photo was published one day after Egyptian Muslims celebrated Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, which commemorates the prophet Abraham's sacrifice of a lamb after God spared Ishmael, his son.
The report’s Arabic-language headline translates to English as: “I rejoice at Eid, I don’t rejoice scenes of animals slaughter and skinning on the street.”
The report translates in part as: “Dr. Khaled Montaser (writer and journalist) expressed his resentment toward the slaughter of animals in the streets.
“He said in a publication on Facebook, the prayer has its place, the fun has its place and so it is for the slaughter of animals that shouldn’t be in the street.
“The street is for all of us, he added. Let’s not cover it with animals blood and slaughter waste. Practice you religious rites in the places intended for such purposes (by the law).
“What we see in the photos is an arbitrary behavior. They enjoy, with their children, scenes of blood and they delight in seeing the streets polluted.
“I, myself rejoice the EID, not these scenes.”
The report’s higher quality version of the photo shows people standing over animals’ bodies. Below is a screenshot of the photo, with a some of the animals’ bodies circled in red by AFP:
Egyptian authorities recently vowed to crack down on the outdoor slaughter of animals on the eve of Eid al-Adha. Here is an AFP story about the developments.
AFP could not independently verify the location of the photo.
