The image was shared in this Facebook post on May 4, 2020.
The post’s Hindi-language caption translates to English as: “The photo aptly describes Modiji’s new India, no need of words.”
Below is a screenshot of the misleading Facebook post:
Modiji refers to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The image was shared alongside a similar claim on Facebook here, here and here and on Twitter here, here, here and here. It was also tweeted here by bollywood music director Vishal Dadlani and retweeted here by Indian lawmaker Shashi Tharoor.
But the photo has been doctored.
A reverse image search on Google found that the top half of the image was taken during a Republic Day parade in Gauhati, a city in the Indian city of Assam, on January 26, 2018. The photo was taken by an Associated Press photographer and published on the AP Images website here.

The bottom half of the image shared in the misleading Facebook post is an AFP photo that was taken on March 27, 2020 in Faridabad, a city in the Indian state of Haryana. The photo, which shows migrant workers traveling to their hometowns during India’s COVID-19 lockdown, was published on AFP Forum here.
