“The Sleeping Lady Mountain, about 33 miles northwest of Anchorage Alaska,” reads the false caption of a post sharing an image of a snow-capped female form.
The claim was also repeated on Facebook here and here, and in Spanish here and here.
Mount Susitna, also known as “Sleeping Lady Mountain,” is located about 33 miles northwest of Anchorage.
However, a reverse image search on Google yielded an image credited to artist Jean-Michel Bihorel called “Winter Sleep.”
Bihorel describes his artistic career in French on his website: “I’ve worked professionally with 3D tools and digital imaging since 2008, when I finished my studies at an animation school.”
The complete installation of the piece is available on the same site, which includes more perspectives of the viral image and a video.
Bihorel shared the image on Facebook on March 19, 2020, and the artwork was posted on online gallery Behance the same day.
AFP Fact Check contacted Bihorel via Facebook to confirm he designed the image.
“I am indeed the author of this digital piece. I wouldn’t know exactly what inspired me for this series of giants in mountainous settings. I visually experiment with the theme of the female body. And I came to this idea of having sleeping bodies in gigantic landscapes a few years ago when I did a series on Mars,” he said.
