AFP met Franck Didron on February 2, 2019 during a march for the injured in Paris, and again in Paris on February 11, 2019.
Why were you there?
I joined the yellow vests because it was really difficult for me to make ends meet.
What happened?
December 1 was my first march. I was in a group of peaceful protesters and we were surrounded by police. My phone rang and it was my mum asking if everything was OK because she’d seen on the news that things didn’t look right. I told her everything was fine. Then yellow vests told me, “watch out, the riot police are charging.” I looked right, and left, and when I turned my head to look behind me I was hit by a rubber bullet.
What is your life like now?
Ever since that moment, I’ve been asking myself why that police officer shot me. Where was the justification? I’d really like him to come forward, look me in the eye and tell me why. He’s ruined my life. The most difficult thing now is judging distance when I hold a glass of water. I need to learn everything all over again. Before the injury, I was a landscape gardener, but it’s very hard to find a job now.
