The opening days of the 2026 FIFA World Cup produced numerous images of fans dressed in unique costumes to support their countries' football teams but one picture of a German fan supposedly dressed up as Adolf Hitler has been altered. The original broadcast did not show anyone resembling the fascist historical figure in the crowd at the match in question, and some of the meme accounts spreading the fake image describe themselves as parody.
"Hitler was one of the biggest German fans today," reads the caption of an image posted to X on June 14, 2026.
The picture shows spectators wearing jerseys and other gear for Germany's national football team, with one of the fans supposedly sporting the Nazi leader's recognizable small square moustache and deep-parted hairstyle.
The same image spread across platforms in posts on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Reddit, with captions in multiple languages, including Albanian, Portuguese, Thai, Chinese, Spanish and Persian.
The graphics in the image indicate it is meant to represent the June 14 World Cup group-stage match between Germany and Curaçao. The Germans routed Curaçao 7-1 in the island nation's first-ever World Cup appearance in Houston during the third day of the month-long tournament taking place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
On top of gameplay highlights, World Cup fans have already generated multiple viral moments while showing support for their teams, including dressing up a duck in Mexico's kit and Japanese supporters cleaning up trash after a match against the Netherlands.
However, the picture of Germany's fans was altered to include someone dressed as Hitler, who led Europe into World War II and was a central orchestrator of the Holocaust.
Extended highlights of the Germany-Curaçao match posted to YouTube by FOX Sports (archived here), the official broadcaster of the tournament in the United States, show the exact moment with the same fans holding identical poses as in the altered picture, without the person disguised as Hitler. Instead, an innocuous supporter with blond hair and a beard is seen holding a German flag, celebrating after player Kai Havertz scored a penalty kick before heading into halftime.
Furthermore, several accounts sharing the altered image identify as meme pages, with names such as "Football Funnys," and could have been sharing the fake picture with the costume of the German dictator in a satirical way.
Post-World War II reservations about nationalism have sometimes complicated Germans' expression of national pride during international football tournaments.
