Social media posts are sharing a picture of Lady Gaga behind a "Trump 2024" sign, claiming she has endorsed the former US president. This is false; the original AFP image shows the pop singer at a 2020 campaign rally for President Joe Biden, and there is no evidence her allegiance has changed.

"I am proud to announce my endorsement of Donald J. Trump for president of the United States!" says text in what appears to be a screenshot of a Truth Social post from Lady Gaga, which includes the image. "America is struggling and we need someone who knows what they're doing to help us back it up."

The supposed post circulated July 2, 2023 on Instagram, accumulating thousands of likes.

The same image also spread on Twitter and TikTok, generating thousands of additional interactions.

But the photo has been manipulated.

AFP photographer Jim Watson captured the original picture at a November 2, 2020 rally for Biden in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A placard on Lady Gaga's lectern says "Battle for the Soul of the Nation" -- one of the president's campaign slogans.

AFP found no active Truth Social accounts belonging to Lady Gaga. One page using @ladygaga has no posts and just 23 followers.

Lady Gaga's accounts on Twitter (archived here) and Facebook (archived here) contain no posts endorsing Trump for president. On Instagram, where she has 55.4 million followers, she features a post (archived here) about the Biden event with the same image from November 2020.

The performer, whose full name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, has long supported Biden:

  • The duo collaborated on a 2017 project aimed at countering sexual assault.
  • In 2020, she participated in Biden campaign events and denounced Trump's treatment of women (archived here).
  • She performed at Biden's inauguration in January 2021.
  • In 2023, the president appointed her co-chair of the Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (archived here).

AFP contacted Lady Gaga's representatives for comment, but no response was forthcoming.
