A video has garnered tens of millions of views after it was shared in misleading posts that claim it shows a poignant moment between martial arts superstar Jackie Chan and his daughter watching his old stunts together. The clip actually shows a movie scene featuring Chan and a Chinese actress. Multiple news reports say Chan does not have a relationship with his real-life daughter.

"Jackie Chan and his daughter crying while waching (sic) some of his old movie scenes is the most wholesome thing you'll watch today. Thanks for our childhood legend," reads a tweet shared on July 4, 2023.

It features a 39-second clip of Chan and a young woman wiping away tears as they watch a montage of stunts from his old movies (archived link).

In the video, the woman asks Chan in Mandarin, "Did it hurt at the time?" to which he replies, "I forgot." She then says: "Papa, you are awesome."

The Hong Kong-born martial arts legend is famous for doing his own action stunts (archived links here and here).

The clip circulated among social media users in India on Facebook and YouTube.

It has racked up over 53 million views in total alongside a similar misleading claim on TikTok and other social media platforms in countries such as Pakistan, the Philippines, Cambodia, the United States, Ghana, Nigeria and Italy.

Similar posts also appeared in Spanish and Portuguese.

However, the claim is misleading.

Movie scene

A keyword search on YouTube found the clip corresponds to a longer video posted on YouTube here on June 22, 2023 (archived link).

The video's description reads: "This scene is from movie: Ride On (2023)". It adds the woman is not Chan's real daughter but she is Chinese actress Liu Haocun.

"Ride On" is a Chinese action comedy movie released on April 7, 2023, starring Chan as an aging stuntman and Liu as his daughter (archived links here and here).

An AFP journalist watched the movie and was able to confirm the clip was taken from the film.

Liu also appears in a bilingual trailer of "Ride On" (archived link).

The actress posted several Chinese-language trailers and behind-the-scene clips from the movie on her YouTube channel (archived link).

Estranged daughter

News articles throughout the years have repeatedly reported Chan has an estranged daughter named Etta Ng -- born out of wedlock following an affair with former Hong Kong beauty queen Elaine Ng.

These include Etta's profile by the Hong Kong-based newspaper South China Morning Post (SCMP) in July and October 2022, and updates about her marriage to her Canadian girlfriend published by CNN and the BBC in November 2018 (archived links here, here, here and here).

In April 2018, Etta, who is also reportedly estranged from her mother, posted a YouTube video pleading for help, saying the couple had been homeless "due to homophobic parents" (archived link).

In an interview in the same year with Hong Kong's Apple Daily, Etta said about her father: "I've never met him in my life. If you asked me, 'Have you ever met him?' I'd ask you, 'Have you ever met him?' My level of familiarity with him is the same as yours" (archived link).

Chan and Taiwanese actress Joan Lin -- his wife of four decades -- have a son called Jaycee Chan.

In his memoir, "Never Grow Up", Chan talks about his wife and son, as well as his shortcomings as a father (archived links here and here).

He acknowledges his affair with Elaine Ng in the book but does not not mention his daughter.
