A video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on Facebook alongside a claim it shows protesters yelling expletives at Philippine presidential hopeful Ferdinand Marcos Jr when he visited the central city of Cebu in 2021. The claim is false: the video has circulated since 2016 in posts about students protesting the burial at the national heroes' cemetery of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, father and namesake of Marcos Jr. The clip was filmed in Quezon City in the country's capital region -- not Cebu City.

The video was shared here on Facebook on October 23, 2021. It has been viewed more than 200,000 times.

It shows a group of people in the middle of a road yelling: "Fuck you, Marcos!"

The video's caption reads: "SORRY GUYS MARCOS IS NOT WELCOME IN CEBU CITY! PITIFUL".

The video circulated online as Marcos Jr visited Cebu City to meet with local officials and supporters as he campaigned for the presidency ahead of the 2022 election.

An identical video was also shared alongside a similar claim on Facebook here and here.

Some social media users appear to have been misled by the posts.

"The people of Cebu have spoken!" one commented.

Another wrote, "Marcos is a thief. You are not welcome in Cebu!"

But the claim is false.

Keyword searches found the video was shared on Twitter here on November 18, 2016. The video's caption reads: "Ateneans cheer 'Fuck you, Marcos'."

The term "ateneans" refers to students at Ateneo de Manila University.

Below is a screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading posts (L) and its corresponding keyframe in the Twitter video (R).

The university's official student publication also published a similar video on Twitter on November 18, 2016.

The caption states: "Ateneans scream 'Fuck you, Marcos!' in indignation. #MarcosBurial".

The former dictator Marcos was buried in a secretive ceremony at the national heroes' cemetery on the same day, AFP reported.

The burial triggered street protests as opponents denounced what they said was the whitewashing of his brutal and corrupt rule.

The video was filmed in front of the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City -- not Cebu City as the posts claim.

The location can be seen here on Google Street View.
