A claim has been repeatedly shared on Facebook that India has taken over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) "for the first time" in 2021. The claim is false: India has assumed the rotating presidency of the UNSC multiple times since the 1950s.

"For the first time in 75 years in the post-Independence era India will take over the presidency of the UNSC," reads this Hindi-language Facebook post on August 2.

The misleading post circulated online as India took over the UNSC presidency in August 2021.

Similar claims were also shared here and here on Facebook.

However, this claim is false.

Since 1950, India has held the UNSC presidency at least nine times: in June 1950, September 1967, December 1972, October 1977, February 1985, October 1991, December 1992, August 2011 and November 2012.

"The presidency of the Council is held by each of the members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the Member States names," reads this information page posted on the UNSC website.

India has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC eight times since 1950, according to this report released by the country's permanent mission to the United Nations.

Before August 2021, the country last chaired the UNSC in November 2012, the same report states.

Multiple news organisations have previously reported on India's UNSC presidency here, and here.
